ABP plans to develop new port land for renewable energy

To boost the offshore wind industry, 14 strategic locations will be made accessible

ABP is bringing forward an additional 435 hectares of development land to boost the UK’s renewable energy sector.

The port firm manages 21 ports around the United Kingdom and is making 14 critical sites accessible for a variety of business purposes, including manufacturing and supply chain operations.

Cardiff, Immingham (seen), Newport, Port Talbot, Southampton, and Hull are among the first batch of locations.

More possibilities will be made available next year.

According to ABP, all locations benefit from great rail and road connectivity as well as sustainable energy generation.

The port operator said it will invest more than £5 million over the next 18 months to prepare the sites for development, including acquiring relevant outline planning consents, technical understanding, and land preparation.

As the UK reshapes its energy generating plan, ports, according to ABP, will play an increasingly vital role in supporting the offshore wind industry.

“One of our largest offshore wind projects is Green Port Hull – a £310 million state-of-the-art production and assembly facility on which we cooperated with the wind turbine provider, Siemens Gamesa Renewable Energy,” stated CEO Henrik Pedersen.

“Facilities off the UK’s East Coast will play a critical part in green energy generation, and we believe our land development plan may help anticipate future industrial demand for these facilities as the country moves toward net zero carbon.”
