GE raises the Haliade-X prototype’s power to 14MW

The biggest turbine in service today is now undergoing certification measures by the manufacturer.

The Haliade-X prototype from GE Renewable Energy near Rotterdam, the Netherlands, has started running at 14MW, making it the first wind turbine in the world to do so.

The Haliade-X 14MW is a more powerful version of the Haliade-X 13MW, which was certified in January 2021.

The Haliade-X 14MW has now officially begun certification measures by the GE Renewable Energy team.

Based on average German North Sea wind conditions, a single turbine may provide up to 74 gigawatt hours of total yearly energy output.

“We’re happy to report that the Haliade-X prototype is the first turbine in the industry to successfully run at 14MW,” said Vincent Schellings, chief technology officer, GE Renewable Energy Offshore Wind.

“We took a giant step ahead in the industry when we initially commissioned our Haliade-X prototype in November 2019 at 12MW.

“We’ve learnt a lot about running and optimizing the performance of our Haliade-X platform over the last two years, allowing us to uprate the Haliade-X platform to 14MW today.”

The Haliade-X 14MW will make its commercial debut in the Dogger Bank C offshore wind farm, approximately 130 kilometers off England’s north coast.

Dogger Bank C will get 87 Haliade-X 14MW units from GE Renewable Energy.
